    Biographical history

    George Henry Raley was born in England in 1864. Ordained as a Methodist minister, he arrived in Kitimat (Kitamaat) in 1893 to set up a mission there. He transferred to Port Simpson in 1906 before assuming the duties of principal at the Coqualeetza Institute (Indian School) in Sardis from 1914 to 1945. He conducted extensive research into totem poles, Indian crafts and the Kitimat Indian language. He died in Vancouver.

    Scope and content

    The fonds consists of correspondence, speeches, research notes, and articles of George Henry Raley pertaining to his years as a Methodist missionary in Kitimat, Fort Simpson and Sardis. Fonds includes minutes and petitions of Kitimat Indians, notebooks of Kitimat resident Arthur Wellington Clah, Raley's research and notes on the Kitimat language, and maps (1898-1913) of Kitimat and area. The fonds also includes photographs of Coqualeetza Institute, agricultural scenes and school activities.
