The collection consists of rare and difficult to obtain limited distribution documents relating to specific case studies, most of which have been printed and distributed by governments and industrial agencies. They generally contain environmental data, and may have interpretive sections. Some documents contain copies of government permits and associated correspondence. The collection is arranged in five primary research subjects: Pulp and Paper Mills, Toxicolocy, Victoria Sewage, Coast and Island Mines, and Regional Collections. Each subject is divided into case studies. Within each case study, documents are arranged in alphabetical order by author.

The chairs' files contain correspondence regarding contentious issues, and some departmental submission and minutes. The fonds consists of a scrapbook containing approximately 250 specimens of dried botanical specimens collected between 1895 and 1918. Each of the specimens has been labelled with name, location and date. Specimens have been collected from a variety of places, including Weymouth, Devonshire, Plymouth, Yorkshire, Sussex, Cornwall, Ilfracombe, Cherbourg, North Donegal, County Antrim, County Down, County Galway, the Isle of Man and, the Isle of Wight.

The fonds consists of seven series: 1. SIP reports, 2. SIP films and photographs, 3. SIP correspondence and field notes, 4. SIP reference literature, 5. Victoria Phenology Project, 6. Teaching and student material, and 7. Aquatic ecology projects. The Seaweed Inventory Project, in particular, is a valuable, detailed record and baseline survey of a substantial part of the coastline of BC, and the vegetation and biota (thus measurable on a global scale) supported at the time of the surveys done in 1972 and 1974. These data stand as a permanent record against which any coastal changes can be compared and measured. The sedentary, attached nature of coastal biota makes it particularly responsive to, and thus a sensitive indicator of changes in their environment. Forces of change include oil spills, toxic spills, runoff from land developments, marina construction, and natural catastrophic events.

The fonds consists of Northwood Pulp & Timber Ltd.s operational and administration records for the sawmills located throughout the northern interior and Prince George, British Columbia under their control during 1952 to 1986. The records provide an extensive look into the sawmill operation from legislation, policies and procedures to the financial records and the sawmill operation itself. The fonds consists of journals, budget books, cards, and clippings of Carter relating to his involvement in the Prince George Advisory Committee, the Legion and the police. Fonds also contains meteorological registers and a weather observation book.

The fonds consists of material generated and collected by West Vancouver civil engineer Gilbert S. Conway with the majority relating to the design, engineering, and construction of Lions Gate Bridge. The collection consists of nautical charts created by over forty institutions, including the Canadian Hydrographic Service, the Admiralty Hydrographic Office, the U.S. Navy Hydrographic Office, the Danish Hydrographic Office, the London Board of Trade and the British East Indian Company. The largest number focus on waters around British Columbia, along with a number of surveys charting the coast of Alaska. The collection also includes charts, including Admiralty charts, of water of the United States, Europe, Africa, and Australia and New Zealand. The collection also contains LORAN charts, meteorological charts, fleet reviews and shipwreck charts.

Fonds consists of a booklet which is inscribed "James Hardy, Nanaimo B.C." and which contains handwritten notes on steam boilers, pressures, etc. Also includes certificates issued to James Hardy for competency as a third class engineer and steam plant operator.

The fonds consists of the climatological station register (1962-1965), snowfall information for the Tappen Valley, and correspondence relating to Ivy Ford's duties as weather observer at Tappen.

The fonds consists of miscellaneous files from George Pickard's office (1949-1974), including records from the Canadian Committee on Oceanography (1960-1972). The bulk of the records are composed of departmental files including correspondence, grant material, and financial records. There is also a comprehensive set of oceanographic log sheets containing data collected between 1951 and 1978.

Some records date from before the formation of the Department, when the psychology program was still part of the Department of Philosophy and Psychology. Also included are audio recordings of interviews (with typed transcripts) documenting the Department's historical development.

The Historical Files series consists of textual records which document the Department's formative years, and photographs; they had been placed in a box and stored separately from the Department's other records until transferred to the Archives.

Fonds includes materials pertaining to the Engineering Science Leads Committee of the B.C. Agricultural Sciences Co-ordinating Committee (BCSCC) on which Watson sat for the period 1967-1978. Composed of representatives of the Provincial Ministry of Agriculture, Agriculture Canada, and the UBC Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, the Committee advised the Minister of Agriculture and allotted research funds for research projects within the province.

Fonds consists of laboratory manuals published by the UBC Department of Physics between 1949 and 1966 (most dated 1957-1962); mimeographed hand-outs for experiments and other assignments; hand-written lecture notes; and a 1944 Canadian Army physics laboratory manual. Many of the manuals are annotated. The manuals are bound, but the notes and hand-outs are loose; all have been placed in acid-free folders. They are arranged by course number, and then chronologically; unnumbered materials, and folders containing unsorted material from various courses, were placed at the end.
