Fonds - Parish of Arrow Lakes/Slocan fonds

The parish of Arrow Lakes/Slocan was formed in 1965 from the amalgamation of the parishes of Arrow Lakes, including St. Agnes', Edgewood and St. Mark's, Nakusp, and Slocan, including St. Stephen's, New Denver and St. Paul's, Slocan. In 1987 St. Agnes', Edgewood was transferred out of the parish and coupled with St. James the Less, Lumby. Anglican work began in the Arrow Lakes and Slocan regions in the 1890's as part of the Nelson (also called Kootenay) Missionary District. In 1897 the Missionary District was subdivided with Kaslo, Ainsworth and the Slocan district placed under separate charge. In the following year this was further subdivided, creating the Slocan Missionary District which included missions at Nakusp (opened 1898), New Denver (opened 1898), Sandon (inactive by 1965) and Slocan City (opened 1900). Services were added at Silverton in 1901 (inactive by 1965) and in 1905 Nakusp was separated and joined with Arrowhead. The Slocan Missionary District, later renamed the parish of Slocan, continued to serve these points until it was joined with the parish of Arrow Lakes in 1965. During the Second World War, a congregation, made up of displaced Japanese-Canadians from the coast, also existed in the parish at New Denver. The parish as a whole was also periodically linked up with the parish of Kaslo (1917-ca. 1924, 1956-1965). The mission of Arrowhead and Nakusp, created in 1905, developed into the mission or parish of Arrow Lakes. New churches were opened at Arrow Park (1912), Burton (services by early 1910's), Edgewood (1913), and Fauquier (services by 1913), as well as other communities. In 1915 the parish was divided into the parishes of Upper and Lower Arrow Lake. St. Mark's, Nakusp served as the centre of Upper Arrow Lake and St. Agnes', Edgewood served as the centre of Lower Arrow Lake. In 1934 the two parishes were reunited into the parish of Arrow Lakes. At the time of amalgamation with the parish of Slocan in 1965, the parish had two active congregations, St. Agnes', Edgewood and St. Mark's, Nakusp. The Burton and Arrow Park churches were closed in 1965, the property having been expropriated by B.C. Hydro; and St. Thomas', Fauquier had closed earlier.
