        History

The parish of Kootenay Lake was formed in 1968 from the immediate amalgamation of the parishes of Nelson and Kokanee. Previously, the administration of parish ministry was conducted in varying parish arrangements. The parish currently consists of St. Saviour's Pro-Cathedral, Nelson; St. Michael and All Angels', Balfour; St. Mark's, Kaslo; St. Francis-in-the-Wood, Queens Bay; St. Matthew's, South Slocan; and St. Andrew-by-the-Lake, Willow Point. Initially the Kootenay region was included in the Kamloops Missionary District which was created in 1884. In 1892 the Nelson (also called Kootenay) Missionary District was separated, including points at Nelson, Ainsworth, Balfour, Kaslo and Pilot Bay. Nelson emerged as an early place of importance and St. Saviour's Church, opened in 1898, was chosen as the Cathedral of the new Diocese of Kootenay at the first Synod held in Nelson in 1900. The years, 1897 to 1923, were marked by a process of expansion in ministry and administrative division of the original missionary district: Kaslo and other points in 1897; Slocan Missionary District in 1898; Ymir Missionary District, ca. 1900; the parish of Kokanee in 1909; the parish of Bonnington in 1910; and the Church of the Redeemer, Nelson in 1923. This was a period of establishing new churches and congregations. In contrast, the years 1935 to 1968, were marked by a pattern of consolidating parish work in the area. By 1935 the parish of Bonnington had amalgamated with the parish of the Church of the Redeemer, Nelson. In 1938 the parishes of Kaslo and Kokanee were joined together. In 1956 these parishes were separated again, with Kaslo being joined together with Slocan. In 1965 Kaslo and Slocan were divided with Kaslo being amalgamated with Kokanee. In 1966 the parish of the Church of the Redeemer and St. Saviour, Nelson amalgamated. Finally, in 1968 the parishes of Kokanee and Nelson, with their constituent congregations, amalgamated to form the parish of Kootenay Lake.
