Biographical history
Known as "Smithie" on the West Coast of Vancouver Island, Walter Hichens-Smith had a long naval career. In 1908 he started out as machinist's apprentice, worked for B.C. Salvage Company, CGS Estevan, Yarrows Ltd., and Island Tug and Barge Company. He was the chief engineer of the salvage tug Sudbury during her rescues and long towing jobs. Hichens-Smith was also a Lieutenant Commander in the Royal Canadian Naval Reserve and served at Naval Control Halifax during the war.
