    Biographical history

Triggered by the Yukon Gold Rush of '98, the White Pass and Yukon's rail route followed the historic trail from Skagway to Whitehorse. The inaugural run of this narrow gauge railway was July 29, 1900. Marine transportation connected Skagway with Vancouver and points south, and road transportation with Dawson City, Inuvik, and other points north. A container system was developed in 1953 to handle the Yukon's transportation requirements, with the 4000 ton "Clifford J. Rogers" pioneering containerized transportation. It carried up to 250 White Pass 7'x8'x8' containers, plus a deck load of assorted freight, providing a combined ship-rail-truck service from Vancouver to the Yukon. The "Rogers" was replaced by the 6000 ton "Frank H. Brown", launched 22 April 1965, which carried 8'x8'x25'3" containers. The "Klondike" was added in 1969, with new docking facilities developed in the 60's adjacent to Pier 94 in North Vancouver. The company is listed as "White Pass and Yukon Route" from 1976, and "White Pass Transportation" from 1980. It is last listed in the 1992 directory.
