Darlene Chapman collection

Collection consists of a scrapbook of newspaper articles collected by Darlene Chapman, a member of the Community Hall Committee of 1975-1976. The collection documents the Committee's drive to have a new complex built in Oliver, including various fund-raising efforts, the breaking of ground for the new complex, updates on the construction process, and the eventual grand opening. Also included is a copy of the opening ceremonies program and one of the official ceremony invitations.

The records document the Association's purpose, its administrative structure, their community participation (March of Dimes children's hospital visits), and their provincial activities such as conventions.

Fonds consists of the Cradle Roll records of the Oliver United Church from 1929-1956. Includes 173 cards documenting the births of many of the local residents. Each card lists the baby's name, the day/month/year of the birth, the parents' names, the family's address, and the date on which the birth was officially registered. Of note, not all births were registered in the same month or even the same year as the birth date.

Brown's letters, memos and accounts payable receipts. The letters and receipts document Mr. Brown's involvement in the supervision of the construction of roads and bridges.

Collection consists of 56 field notebooks compiled by various B.C. Land Surveyors from 1871-1923, including both originals and photostat copies. The field notebooks include hand-written notes and remarks, hand-drawn maps and sketches, and geological surveys from the Oliver, Osoyoos and Similkameen districts. Each notebook documents a specific mineral claim, land purchase, or pre-emption of land by local residents.

Fonds consists of the personal records of Clifford Atley Charlton from 1934-1944. Includes a cash book containing the monthly and yearly household tallies for Mr. Charlton's home and farm. Each months' tally shows income (pension, crop income), general expenses (bank note on farm, tractor repairs). Also included in the cash book are some personal notes, and pages of detailed meteorological data. The meteorological data could have been compiled for the Oliver Meteorological Station, during Mr. Charlton's career as official weather monitor.

The photographs document the Barritt and Rienhart family life, the growth (physically, economically and socially) of the town of Oliver and the various types of local farming.

Fonds consists of the personal records of Hugh Porteous from 1923, ca 1940-1969 and 1982. Includes a scrapbook (ca. 1940-1969, 1982) filled with newspaper articles written by Mr. Porteous (a few about him) during his career as a reporter. In addition, there are articles (obituaries, announcements of marriage) about various members of his family. Of particular note in the scrapbook is a typed article written by Elizabeth Kangyal (1982), hailing Mr. Porteous' achievements. This article was presented to Mr. Porteous at his 89th birthday in 1982. Also found within the scrapbook is a stock certificate (1923) made out to Hugh Porteous for 50 shares of the Oliver Co-operative Growers' Exchange.

Fonds consists of the records of the Oliver Meteorological Station from 1925-1957 and 1967-1970. Includes two official Meteorological Service of Canada registers, and a notebook recording data on local weather. The first register contains five pages of data on the maximum and minimum temperatures of each day in various months from 1938 and 1954. The majority of the data was collected by the Official Weather Recorder, Clifford Charlton, the rest by Allan Abel. The second register only contains two pages of data - the maximum and minimum temperatures for April 1942, and data on mean temperatures and humidity, wind and rainfall. The notebook contains extensive data on the highest and lowest monthly temperatures, average monthly temperatures, and the total amounts of rain or snowfall recorded in the Oliver area. Data is listed for every month in each year from 1925-1957. Also included are five loose pages of meterorological data from 1967-1970, also compiled by Clifford Charlton.
